It's Lucky to be Yucky!
I recently stumbled upon an article on Entrepreneur.com by Jeff Elgin titled "
Dirty Jobs: the Secret to Success in 2010".
The essence of Jeff's article is this: if you're looking for a successful franchise, consider the "dirty" jobs that no one wants to perform. He cites grease cleaning, duct cleaning, restoration services and janitorial services in his article, but I think he left out a real obvious one - sealcoating. Sealcoating is a very dirty job. You're typically working on hot asphalt with hot rubber melters and you have to preclean the surface before you can treat it. Most homeowners are loathe to perform this service and of those that do attempt it, a large percentage swear they'll never try it again. It just isn't easy stuff to work with...it sticks to everything and it does not behave like paint. I see thousands of driveways each year and it's easy to spot a driveway that was sealed by an amateur - messy streaks, stains on the house, improperly sealed cracks, etc. Professionals can make a big difference in the way your driveway and parking lot will look and perform.
Getting back to Jeff's article - we feel quite fortunate to be in the "yucky" category these days as we saw market growth in 2009 - a feat few can point to these days. And, interest in all three of our franchises (BLACK DAWG SEALCOAT, YELLOW DAWG STRIPING and YELLOW DAWG STRIPING) has spiked recently. The low-cost service model is the place to be these days.
And, remember - our BLACK DAWG SEALCOAT franchise owners don't actually perform these services- they run the business and their crews do the work.
